ShooterFree

Freedoom

By Freedoom contributors

Freedoom is a free, original first-person shooter made as game data rather than an engine. Phase 1 is four nine-level episodes for Ultimate Doom mods, Phase 2 is a 32-level Doom II-compatible episode, and FreeDM is a 32-map deathmatch set. The project recommends Crispy Doom, the Eternity Engine, or GZDoom, and separately notes an Android package that bundles GZDoom. Its artwork is offered under the BSD terms in COPYING.adoc when the copyright notice and a Freedoom credit stay with the work.

F7 INSIGHTFreedoom is worth the download because the art, levels, and sound are the actual game. The engine's old GPL never covered Doom's content, so this project is the piece a small team can study, ship, and credit without pretending the original game data became free.

SimulationFree

FreeRCT

By FreeRCT contributors

FreeRCT is a free and open source theme-park game that aims for the look and play of RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and 2. Its repository screenshot shows landscaping, fence building, guests, and a coaster in one isometric view. Linux is the system the project officially supports, while the readme says Windows and macOS should work. The graphics live in the same repository as LICENSE-gpl-2.0.txt, and that file does not exclude the screenshot.

F7 INSIGHTTheme parks get interesting when the tool, the guest, and the money stay on one screen. FreeRCT is a compact place to study that kind of simulation, with original park art shipped beside the GPL-2.0 text instead of borrowed commercial sprites.

Unexpected Keyboard

By Julow

Unexpected Keyboard is a lightweight Android keyboard that types extra characters by swiping a key toward its corners. Julow first made it for programmers using Termux, and the readme now presents it for everyday typing. It says the app has no ads and is open source. Google Play and F-Droid are both linked. The readme does not state a monetary price.

F7 INSIGHTA keyboard that hides the extra symbols in the corners of each key is a better fit for a phone than another long-press popup. Unexpected Keyboard is the rare input app that started from a terminal workflow and still explains the gesture in one sentence.

Rethink DNS + Firewall + VPN

By Mohammed Hussain, Murtaza Aliakbar, and Santhosh Ponnusamy

Rethink is an Android firewall, DNS client, and VPN from three developers in Coimbatore. It can send apps through WireGuard, SOCKS5, or HTTP CONNECT tunnels, block apps by screen state or network type, and log which app connected where. DNS can go to DNS over HTTPS, TLS, DNSCrypt, or Oblivious DNS over HTTPS. The readme prices the optional Rethink Proxy Network from 1.75 US dollars a month and does not state a price for the app itself.

F7 INSIGHTA phone firewall is useful only if it can name the app, not just the socket. Rethink is interesting because the same screen also chooses the DNS path and the tunnel, which is the control most consumer VPN apps split across three products.

TransitFree

Transportr

By Transportr contributors

Transportr is a free public-transport assistant for Android, made as a non-profit project and described as having no ads or tracking. It finds connections, shows the trip on a map, lists live departures where a network supports them, and remembers frequent places. GPS is used to find nearby stops and to follow progress along a journey. The repository says the program is GPL-3.0-or-later.

F7 INSIGHTTransit apps usually stop at the next departure. Transportr is more useful because the route, the transfer, and the reminder of where to get off stay in one free app that also lets a city be added when it is missing.

Delta Chat

By Delta Chat contributors

Delta Chat is a decentralized messenger. The homepage describes instant messaging with multiple profiles and devices, signup through interoperable chatmail relays, web apps inside chats, and audited end-to-end encryption against network and server attacks. The Android client is GPL-3.0-or-later and links Google Play, F-Droid, and other downloads. Neither page states a monetary download price.

F7 INSIGHTA messenger gets more interesting when the address is not trapped in one company's directory. Delta Chat keeps the Android app on ordinary Internet standards and chatmail, so the encryption story and the account story are the same product.

Fossify File Manager

By Fossify

Fossify File Manager browses folders on an Android device without a sign-in step. It can favorite paths, search and sort, show hidden files, and compress or extract archives. Copying, moving, renaming, and sharing stay on the device, with a password, pattern, or fingerprint lock available. The app does not request Android's Internet permission. The project does not state a monetary price.

F7 INSIGHTA file manager earns its place when archives and the storage summary are in the same app as the folder tree. Fossify File Manager keeps that work on the device, which matters more than another cloud shortcut on the home screen.

Fossify Clock

By Fossify

Fossify Clock is an Android world clock, alarm, timer, and stopwatch. Cities can be labeled, alarms can use vibration and a ringtone, and volume can rise gradually with a custom snooze. Widgets put the clock on the home screen. The project marks the current release as beta and says the app does not request Internet permission. No monetary price is stated.

F7 INSIGHTAn alarm is a poor place for an account. Fossify Clock keeps cities, snooze, and widgets on the device, so the thing that has to work at 6 a.m. does not depend on a clock vendor staying online.

Fossify Camera

By Fossify

Fossify Camera takes photos and videos on Android without an account or a cloud gallery. It can switch cameras, zoom, use the flash, and set output quality and the save path. Location tags are optional. The project marks the current release as beta and says the app does not request Internet permission. No monetary price is stated.

F7 INSIGHTThe useful camera setting is where the file lands. Fossify Camera makes the save path and the decision to skip a cloud gallery visible, which is the part worth copying when a capture app starts adding accounts.
